How Much Can Cambridge Biotech Startups Claim in R&D Tax Credits?

Cambridge biotech, AI, and deep tech companies that invest in qualifying research and development can claim significant relief under HMRC’s merged R&D tax credit scheme. Loss-making companies receive a payable credit worth 27p for every £1 of qualifying expenditure under the Enhanced R&D Intensive Scheme (ERIS) for R&D-intensive SMEs, while profitable companies reduce their tax liability substantially. Qualifying expenditure includes staff costs, subcontractor costs, consumables used in R&D, cloud computing costs, and software licences. Hayes identifies every qualifying cost, prepares the technical narrative required by HMRC, and maximises your claim — typically submitting within 4–6 weeks of engagement.

Cambridge's Innovation Economy Needs Accountants Who Think Like Founders

Silicon Fen — the technology cluster centred on Cambridge — is the UK’s most productive innovation economy outside London. Cambridge Science Park, the world’s first, now houses over 150 companies. The Cambridge Biomedical Campus is one of Europe’s largest concentrations of medical research. AstraZeneca moved its global headquarters to Cambridge in 2016. Arm Holdings — the chip designer that powers virtually every smartphone on earth — was founded here. Over 800 technology companies operate within the Cambridge postcode. The total economic output of the Cambridge cluster now exceeds £19 billion annually.

For the founders, academics, and investors who drive this economy, tax is not a simple matter. R&D tax credits need to be claimed correctly from day one — many Cambridge startups overpay by failing to identify all qualifying expenditure. EIS and SEIS investor relief must be structured correctly to protect investors. EMI share schemes need HMRC advance approval before any options are granted. And as Cambridge companies grow, corporation tax, payroll, VAT, and cash flow management all become critical to survival through the scale-up phase.

Hayes serves Cambridge’s innovation economy with accounting that goes well beyond compliance. We think commercially, act proactively, and treat your tax position as a strategic asset — not a box-ticking exercise. Fixed fees, ACCA-qualified team, same-day response, and a genuine understanding of what it takes to build a Cambridge technology company.

Fenland Agricultural & Estate Tax Cambridgeshire

Cambridgeshire’s flat fenlands are some of England’s most productive arable farmland — growing significant proportions of the UK’s potatoes, sugar beet, celery, and grain crops. Fenland farming estates often carry significant inheritance tax exposure that Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief can substantially reduce. We advise Cambridgeshire farming families on APR qualification, estate succession planning, and the tax treatment of farm diversification income.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions — Cambridge & Cambridgeshire Accounting

Cambridge biotech, AI, and deep tech companies can claim under HMRC’s merged R&D tax credit scheme introduced from April 2024. For R&D-intensive SMEs that qualify under the Enhanced R&D Intensive Scheme (ERIS) — where R&D expenditure exceeds 30% of total expenditure — the payable credit is 27p for every £1 of qualifying cost. For other SMEs, the merged scheme gives a 20% credit against taxable profits or a payable credit for loss-making companies. Qualifying expenditure includes staff costs, external contractor costs, cloud computing used in R&D, consumables, and certain software licences. Hayes identifies all qualifying costs, prepares the technical narrative, and typically submits within 4–6 weeks of engagement.
The Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS) gives investors in qualifying early-stage companies 30% income tax relief on investments up to £1 million per year. Additionally, gains on EIS shares held for at least three years are completely exempt from Capital Gains Tax. If the investment makes a loss, loss relief can be set against income. For very early-stage Cambridge startups, the Seed EIS (SEIS) is even more generous — offering 50% income tax relief on investments up to £200,000. Cambridge startups must obtain HMRC advance assurance before approaching EIS/SEIS investors, and we prepare these applications as part of our startup accounting package.
Cambridge investors and VCs expect well-prepared management accounts before committing to a Series A investment. This typically includes monthly profit and loss accounts, balance sheet, cash flow statement, and KPI dashboard — all prepared on an accruals basis using your chosen cloud accounting software. Investors also want to see a detailed budget for the next 12 months, a three-year financial model with clear assumptions, a runway analysis showing how long the current cash will last, and unit economics data for SaaS or recurring revenue businesses. Hayes prepares all of this as part of our management accounts and budgeting service for Cambridge startups.
Cambridge landlords pay income tax on net rental profit at their marginal rate. Since Section 24 was fully phased in, mortgage interest is no longer deductible from rental income — instead a 20% basic rate tax credit is applied. For higher-rate taxpayers this significantly increases the effective tax rate. Allowable expenses include letting agent fees, insurance, repairs, maintenance, ground rent, and professional fees. HMO licences are deductible. Capital improvements (like a new kitchen) are generally not deductible against rental income but may reduce your CGT liability when you sell. Hayes advises Cambridge landlords on whether incorporating their portfolio into a limited company makes financial sense — the answer depends on your personal income, the number of properties, and your long-term plans.
Many people working remotely from Cambridge — particularly those who moved out of London during the pandemic and are employed by London companies on PAYE — do not need to file a self-assessment if their only income is employment income and they have no other tax to pay. However, you must file a self-assessment if you are self-employed, have rental income from Cambridge property, have income over £100,000 (triggering personal allowance taper issues), have capital gains above the annual exempt amount, receive child benefit and have income over £60,000, or have foreign income. Hayes assesses whether you need to file and manages the process completely if you do.

Client Reviews — Cambridge & Cambridgeshire

★★★★★

“I’m a co-founder at a Cambridge genomics startup. Hayes set up our EIS advance assurance, claimed R&D credits in our first year, and built our Series A investor pack. They recovered over £31,000 in R&D credits and our investors were impressed by the financial reporting quality. Outstanding.”

Dr Sarah L.Co-Founder, Genomics Startup, Cambridge Biomedical Campus
★★★★★

“I contract at Arm Holdings and my previous accountant had never done a proper IR35 review. Hayes reviewed my contract, confirmed I was outside IR35, saved my limited company structure, and I’m now keeping around £7,500 more per year. They know Cambridge tech contracting inside out.”

Tom F.Software Contractor, Arm Holdings Cambridge
★★★★★

“We have a Fenland arable farm near Ely and Hayes sorted our APR position for the first time in twenty years. They restructured how we hold the land, ensured full agricultural relief applies, and did our annual accounts at a fraction of what we’d been paying. Hugely professional.”
